Birthstone for the month of February:
AMETHYST
Within popular culture, amethyst is recognized as the birthstone
for February. According to spiritual healers, it is used to
calm the stressed and aid in a more restful and productive sleep.
It has also been known to bring tranquility and stability to its
wearer as well as possess great healing powers.
Amethyst's importance throughout history has been recognized in
many countries all over the world. The earliest recognition of this
stone and the origin of its name began in Ancient Greece. The word
"amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos"
meaning "not drunken" or "without wine" and is
believed to protect the wearer against intoxication.
It has been used to adorn the possessions of rich and powerful
monarchs as well as Egyptian royalty. Rare amethysts make up
some of the stones set in the British Crown Jewels. During the
Middle Ages, the stone symbolized piety and celibacy for clergy and
therefore adorned the rings and other jewellery of Cardinals,
Bishops, and Priests of the Catholic Church. It was also
sometimes referred to as "Rose of France", and commonly
set in Victorian jewellery.
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. It is an
extremely popular gem for jewellery because of its regal colour,
variety of sizes and shapes, affordability and wide range of hues.
The rich deep violet colour is generally the most desired and the
most expensive, but a stone of medium colour intensity, with plenty
of sparkle, can also be very attractive. It is also the
recommended gem for couples celebrating their sixth wedding
anniversary. Occasionally, amethyst is even found combined
with its sister quartz, citrine (yellow) into a single stone called
ametrine.
Amethyst deposits are located throughout the world, including
Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Madagascar, India &
Sri Lanka. They have also been found in Canada, certain parts
of the United States, & within the Ural Mountains of Russia.
